HVAC system causes alarm at Bank of the West in Big Piney

BIG PINEY, WYOMING – August 29, 2018: Sublette County Unified Fire responded to the report of smoke coming from the ceiling in the Bank of the West located in Big Piney. On arrival Battalion 2 units from SCUF began investigating to determine the source of the reported smoke. A thermal imager was used to inspect the ceiling and surrounding areas for any signs of elevated heat. No evidence of fire was observed. Units from Battalion 4 and 5 were also paged to respond but were cancelled and returned to their home stations.
On further investigation, it was determined the source of the "smoke" was actually from the HVAC system. With the morning temperatures dropping, the heater in the bank turned on and heated dust from the HVAC unit gave the appearance of smoke from the ceiling. There was no damages or injuries reported with this call.
With cooler temperatures on the way this is great time of year to ensure that heating equipment in homes and businesses are functioning properly. Here are a few tips you can think on going into the winter season:
• Check/replace the air filter as needed
• Check the vents – clean and remove items from in in front of them
• Clean chimneys and air intakes
• Schedule a yearly professional checkup
