Celebrate National Public Lands Day at the CCC Ponds Sept. 7
by Bureau of Land Management
August 19, 2013

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Pinedale Field Office and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Pinedale Ranger District invite volunteers to participate in the National Public Lands Day (NPLD) event at the CCC Pond Recreation Area in Pinedale, Wyoming on Saturday, September 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Volunteers are needed to make any NPLD event a success. Activities will include maintenance and painting of the warming hut, bridge and kiosk, clearing brush around the parking lot, stabilization of shoreline fishing access, and cleaning and maintenance of the bluebird houses. Educational opportunities and activities will also be offered for children.

The CCC Pond Recreation Area is an outstanding community resource. The four ponds – Fish, Duck, Beaver and Frog - offer outstanding fishing, wildlife viewing, bird watching, walking, jogging, biking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing and local schools routinely utilize the ponds as an outdoor classroom to study water quality, insects, and wildlife and fisheries habitat.

Individuals, families and groups are welcome. To register, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Kathy Flanders at 307-367-5312 or register at the CCC Ponds Recreation Area on Sept. 7. Participants should wear proper work attire and bring safety glasses and gloves. Gloves will also be provided. Children must be at least eight years old to volunteer. Activities are planned for children seven years old and under. Lunch will be provided.

To get to the CCC Pond Recreation Area from Pinedale, turn north on to Skyline Drive off Highway 191, continue 3.2 miles, then turn left on Fremont Lake Road. The CCC Pond Recreation Area is on the left, half a mile past Lakeside Lodge.

This event is being organized and sponsored by the BLM and USFS with support from the Town of Pinedale, Sublette County, Sublette County Conservation District, Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Sublette County School District, Sublette County Recreation Board, the Natural Resource Conservation Service, Ultra, Encana, SWEPI LP and QEP.

NPLD began in 1994 with 700 volunteers and three sites. 2012 was the biggest NPLD in the history of the event with about 175,000 volunteers working at 2,206 sites in every state, the District of Columbia and in many U.S. territories. Volunteers collected an estimated 23,000 pounds of invasive plants, built and maintained an estimated 1,500 miles of trails, planted an estimated 100,000 trees, shrubs and other native plants, removed an estimated 500 tons of trash from trails and other places and contributed an estimated $18 million through volunteer services to improve public lands across the country. Eight federal agencies as well as nonprofit organizations and state, regional and local governments participate in the annual day of caring for public lands.
