Through a grant funded by the Daniels Fund and the state 4-H program, 4-H members from the southwest district gathered at the University of Wyoming campus to spend two days touring the University and learning about career opportunities and college prep.

Youth started their two-day venture by attending the animal science seminar series where UW junior and senior students presented their summer internship experiences varying from ovarian cancer research to horse training in Australia. The group then joined professors and department heads to tour various departments and facilities in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources including the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory, the UW meat lab, the college greenhouse, the Berry Bio-diversity center and stable isotope lab. In celebration of Veteran’s Day, youth worked alongside collegiate 4-H members, including Sublette County alumni Liz Shaffer and Jenny Beiermann, to complete a community service project to support operation military kids. The evening was rounded out by experiencing campus athletics and attending the UW Cowgirls basketball game against Utah State University.

Day two of the exploration involved participation in the University of Wyoming Discovery Days, where students were able to interact with representatives from each college department and select from a facet of them for a more in-depth tour. University personnel covered degree possibilities, internships, scholarship opportunities, college prep courses, workstudy and post graduate opportunities. Additionally, youth were able to dine at Washakie Center and tour the dorms for a first-hand look at living on campus.

Sublette and Uinta County programs were represented at the event. Youth attending from Sublette County included: Jessie Conner and KayceeMcNinch (both of Big Piney) Kelli Terrell, Brookely Schamber, Erik Kleven, Alison Sturman, Ali Wadsworth, Nikki Wadsworth, Thomas Shaffer and Bailey Hersom (Pinedale).
