4-wheel drive access only Ė travel at your own risk
by Pinedale Online!
July 5, 2011

As of Tuesday, July 5th, the Forest Service reports that the BLM portion of the Big Sandy Road has been temporarily fixed. The Forest Service portion of the road has lots of water on the road and is not suitable for 2-wheel drive vehicles. It is possible to get in with a 4-wheel drive vehicle, but travel at your own risk. Vehicles must stay on the roadway. Citations will be issued for vehicles that attempt to get through by going off the roadway. RVs are not recommended. The Big Sandy Campground is still closed. Trails are wet and muddy with very high water at stream crossings. Canít get very far before running into snow. Water is fast and knee to thigh deep. Jack Ass Pass and Cirque of the Towers are still not accessible due to deep snow. It may be as late as August before the high mountain trails are accessible, depending on how quickly the melt goes in the next couple of weeks. Mosquitoes, ticks, and biting horseflies are out.
