State evaluates turnouts and sign inventory along Wyoming Highways
30-Day public comment period on study
by Diane Shober, Director, Wyoming Office of Tourism
February 13, 2011

We have partnered with the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) and the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to conduct a study to evaluate the turnout and sign inventory along Wyoming highways. The purpose of the study is to enhance the visitor experience, to assist each agency in identifying areas in need of improvement, and to guide funding of future projects. The study was conducted by Parson Brinkerhoff America and Click Point Ranch of Denver, Colorado.

The study was conducted in two phases. Phase I focused on inventorying existing roadway turnout sites selected from the SHPO Monuments and Markers database and Game and Fish sites. A total of 217 sites were analyzed from an engineering, safety and signage perspective. Phase II focused on identifying and researching key areas of Wyoming which may be considered for future interpretive turnouts. As a result, 23 sites have been recommended for consideration and do not constitute approved projects.

We are now providing a 30-day comment period to solicit your feedback of the study. The Phase I and Phase II draft reports can be viewed at our website: www.wyomingofficeoftourism.gov.

The deadline for public comment is Friday, February 18, 2011.

Please email your comments, thoughts or suggestions to Leslie Kedelty, Industry Services Manager, at Leslie.Kedelty@visitwyo.gov and reference "Public Comment–Planning Study" in the subject line. Feel free to share this with other tourism officials or businesses in your community or area.

Thanks for your support on this project. The final report will be completed by March. This report will also supplement the Tourism Master Plan and our efforts to develop a viable travel and tourism industry in the years to come.
