The Pinedale and Big Piney Afterschool programs will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Lights on Afterschool program, Thursday, October 22, 2009. This annual event will call attention to the importance of afterschool programs nationwide and highlight local programs as well.

It is anticipated that over1 million Americans will celebrate Lights on Afterschool at more than 7500 afterschool programs.

The Sublette County Afterschool Program is administered by Robin Schamber through the 4-H program. Jennifer Anderson of Pinedale and Keyth Palmer of Big Piney serve as local directors. Sublette County, School Districts #1 and #9, the Sublette County Child Care Coalition and community partners including EnCana Oil and Gas, USA, Chevron, BOCES #1, local libraries, the communities of Big Piney, Marbleton, and Pinedale, and United Way of Southwest Wyoming offer in-kind or funding support to provide healthy, multi-disciplined and safe programs. Sublette County Elementary students learn life skills, including specific education in the areas of science, technology and engineering, leadership, civics, arts and culture, and healthy lifestyles.

Pinedale will celebrate at the Pinedale Elementary School Lunchroom from 3:15 pm-5:15pm. Mayor Steve Smith will present a proclamation designating October 22nd as "Lights on Afterschool Day" in Pinedale. Several activities are planned including creating light bulb art to share with local elected officials, decorating trick or treat bags in preparation for Halloween and a slide show featuring fall activities. Cake and lemonade will be served. The public is invited to attend this free event.

Big Piney Afterschool Program will celebrate Lights on Afterschool at the Big Piney Elementary Lunchroom at 7 p.m. on October 22nd with an Open House. Proclamations from Mayor Jim Robinson of Marbleton, and Mayor Phil Smith of Big Piney will be read. Students will present a puppet show, share their craft activities and give their parents special fall gifts. Logan Barlow, who is a 4-H member and works with the afterschool program as an assistant, will provide character counts tips. Cupcakes and punch will be served. The public is invited to join students and their parents at this special event.
