Winter Storm Watch
Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening
January 27, 2006

The National Weather Service out of Riverton has issued a Winter Storm Watch from Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening.

A powerful, fast-moving Pacific storm will spread snow across western Wyoming Saturday afternoon, with the heaviest snowfall expected Saturday evening. Winds will increase as this storm passes through western Wyoming Saturday night, likely creating significant blowing and drifting snow through Sunday morning.

This watch includes the areas of the Wind River and Gros Ventre Mountains, Yellowstone National Park, Salt and Wyoming Ranges, the Upper Green Basin and foothills, Jackson, Pinedale, LaBarge, Kemmerer, Afton and Alpine.

Snowfall rates of 1-2 inches an hour are possible with this storm, with wind gusts of 15-35 mph possible. Travelers should expect winter driving conditions with blowing and drifting snow, and hazardous driving conditions over mountain passes. Total snowfall of 6-10 inches is expected in the western valleys and 10-14 inches in the surrounding mountains.

Temperatures are expected to be in the high 20s with wind chill values between -1 and 9 over the weekend. After the weekend, temperatures will climb to the low 30s partly cloudy skies with a chance of snow.
