Bull Elk Poached in Yellowstone Park
Reward offered
by Yellowstone National Park
January 8, 2006

The headless carcass of a bull elk was discovered late last week just yards away from a busy highway in Yellowstone National Park.

Rangers discovered the dead animal Friday, December 30, 2005, near US Highway 191 near mile marker 29 inside the park. The carcass was found about 70 yards off the highway.
A preliminary investigation by rangers and wildlife experts suggests the elk had been shot and killed the day before it was discovered. Extensive physical evidence was found at the scene.

The park is asking the public to call if they have any information on this crime. A $500 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and successful prosecution of the person or persons responsible for killing the bull elk. Anyone with information on this incident is urged to call Special Agent Bruce Applin at 307-244-2121. Anonymous tips may be left on Yellowstone’s “We Tip” crime hotline at 307-344-2132.

Hunting is illegal inside Yellowstone National Park. Any person found in the park with animal parts, a dead or wounded animal, or loaded firearms, may be charged under Federal law. Violators may be subject to fines, equipment forfeiture, a ban from Yellowstone and possible jail sentences.
