Talk on developing probability models to find high elevation archaeological sites
February 16, 2018

The Upper Green River Basin Chapter of the Wyoming Archeology Society will be having a meeting on Tuesday, February 20th, at 6:30 pm at the Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale. There will be a short business meeting followed by a presentation by Paul Burnett who will give a talk on, "Expanding Archaeological Probability Models across Wyoming’s High Altitudes." Burnett is the Interim Director at SWCA Environmental Consultants. The public is welcome to attend.

A series of detailed archaeological probability models are being developed for high elevations in Northwestern Wyoming. These have been effectively deployed in a variety of sample surveys, such as post-fire surveys, ice patch inventories, and as an aid to exploratory surveys. Model tests indicate that these can be highly effective at targeting areas that contain what in places is an astounding record of archaeological material. The first series of models were built for the Shoshone National Forest, and preliminary models have since been developed for the Bighorn Mountains. Burnett will provide an overview of the model development process and associated tests, offer examples of some of the more notable archaeological material that correlates with high probability areas, and discuss model critiques, potential model improvements, and upcoming model areas.
