Wyoming could see display of Northern Lights Sept. 12th
September 11, 2014
Skywatchers are alerted that there may be an opportunity to see the Northern Lights on Friday night, Sept. 12th, due to solar flare headed earthward. The display should best be visible to the northwest and central United States, including Wyoming. The phenomenon, known as a coronal mass ejection (CME), is a cloud of charged particles released from activity from the sun. It is expected to create a geomagnetic storm in Earth's atmosphere around midday Friday, causing the northern lights show. A flare of this magnitude could also adversely affect GPS functionality, radio frequencies, cell phone and satellite reception.
