Annual meeting of the Sublette County Historical Society at the Museum of the Mountain Man

March 15, 2013

The Sublette County Historical Society held their annual meeting and Spring Thaw Party on Thursday, March 14th at the Museum of the Mountain Man.

The society elected J.D "Sam" Drucker as the new President, and Jackie Sell as a new board member.

Retiring Sublette County Historical Society President, Clint Gilchrist, gave a presentation on photographs by artist Albert Bierstadt who came to the Green River Valley in 1859 with Frederick Lander. The Historical Society recently acquired a donation of two Albert Bierstadt photos taken along the Lander Cutoff of the Oregon Trail in 1859. They are believed to be the oldest photographs taken in Sublette County.

The event is a chance for the Historical Society to update its members on the projects and activities of the previous year and elect new officers to the board of directors.

Historical Society members got the first look at the new displays for the 2013 season in the Museum. Director Laurie Hartwig announced the retirement of Business Manager, Millie Pape, in January. Two new employees were hired in January, Kim Fletcher, as the new Business Manager, and Hannah Braun as Curator.

The Museum also got a new look for the gift shop. The redecorating was donated by Wendy Walter and Mary Lynn Mickelson of The Barn Door Interior Design in Pinedale. Antique furniture, a beautiful red rug and round table, and crates were brought in to use as design elements for the displays. New items have been brought in to expand the purchase items in the gift shop.

The delicious refreshments for the Spring Thaw Party were generously donated by Sue Eversull.

The Museum will open for the season on May 1st and will be open daily from 9AM to 5PM through September 30th. Admission is free for Sublette County residents. Non-resident admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and $3 for children 6-12. Click here for membership information.

The Sublette County Historical Society is the parent organization of the Museum of the Mountain Man, Sommers Ranch Homestead historical site, and soon-to-open Lander Trail-New Fork River Crossing 104-acre historical park.

    Crossing the Big Sandy
One of the Albert Bierstadt photographs is of a wagon train on the Lander Cutoff of the Oregon Trail crossing the Big Sandy River in 1859. That crossing is today known as Buckskin Crossing on the Big Sandy-Elkhorn Road #23-118 in Sublette County. This is one of the oldest known photographs taken in Sublette County. This glass plate stereograph was recently donated to the Museum to add to their collection of artifacts related to the Lander Trail.

Albert Bierstadt brought a stereo wet-plate camera with him when he traveled west to the Green River Valley with Frederick Landerís military expedition in 1859. This was the newest photography technology at the time, which used a camera that captures two images on chemically coated piece of plate glass to create a double image negative, prints of which can be viewed in a stereograph viewer as a 3-D image.
