Flag half-staff notice - Sept. 11th
Day of Reverence for the 10-Year Anniversary of 9/11
September 9, 2011

On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Often referred to as 9/11, the attacks resulted in extensive death and destruction, triggering major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism and defining the presidency of George W. Bush. Over 3,000 people were killed during the attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., including more than 400 police officers and firefighters.

By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the Congress has designated September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day," and by Public Law 111-13, approved April 21, 2009, the Congress has requested the observance of September 11 as an annually recognized "National Day of Service and Remembrance."

All Americans are asked to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46AM EST, the time in which the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center that fateful day.

In the Presidential Proclamation, President Barack Obama said, "I call upon the people of the United States to participate in community service in honor of those our Nation lost, to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities, including remembrance services, and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time to honor the innocent victims who perished as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001."

Sunday, September 11, 2011, all U.S. flags should be at half-staff from sunrise to sunset in memory of the 2,993 Americans lost in the September 11th attacks in 2001.
