Bridger-Teton seeks volunteers for National Public Lands Day Sept. 17
September 4, 2011

The Bridger-Teton National Forest is seeking approximately 50 volunteers to help with National Public Lands Day projects and activities at the CCC Ponds Interpretive Site on September 17, 2011 from 8:00 AM to 12:00 noon in Pinedale, WY.

The CCC Ponds site is approximately 4-miles northeast of Pinedale and approximately half of a mile south of Lakeside Lodge.

The CCC Ponds Interpretive Site is located on public lands managed jointly by the US Forest Service (USFS) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM). This site commemorates Camp Fremont, one of the first Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camps in the nation initiated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to alleviate economic hardships brought on by the Great Depression of the 1930s. Camp Fremont (C13), located at the south end of Fremont Lake, was fully operational from 1933-1942.

It is fitting to celebrate National Public Lands Day at the CCC Ponds in memory of the young men and women of the CCC who constructed the majority of the campgrounds, roads, trails, bridges, and guard stations on our public lands with minimal compensation (CCC members were paid $35/week, $25 of which was required to be sent home to their families).

Projects for the September 17, 2011 National Public Lands Day at the CCC Ponds will include general cleanup, brush and trail clearing, bench installation, bridge and sign painting, and other projects. No special skills are required and volunteers of all ages are welcome.

Volunteers should contact 307-367-4326 (USFS) or 307-367-5300 (BLM) to sign up and/or receive more information. Although pre-registration isnít required, lunch will be provided to participants who pre-register.

Directions on how to reach this site will be posted outside the Pinedale Ranger District Office at 29 E. Fremont Lake Road (next to Ridleys Grocery Store) in Pinedale.
