Riverton National Weather Service Office now on Facebook

The National Weather Service office in Riverton has begun using Facebook in order to expand its use of social media and streamline office operations.
The use of Facebook will allow the Riverton office to reach out, collaborate, and interact with the public. Facebook gives NWS Riverton ‘fans’ the capability to ‘write on their wall’ (provide their own postings) and comment on posts on the page. Comments and posts can range from weather spotter reports, to simple statements or detailed questions.
The NWS prototype team, formed in 2010, explored the application of Facebook as a tool to expand the reach of NWS information at field offices and national centers nationwide. The positive results from various test offices led to the decision to expand this program to all weather forecast offices. Posted content will range from a mix of environmental information, such as daily weather forecast and warning information, to specifics about outreach and education opportunities. This information will consist primarily of manual posts, though automated posting will also be tested.
The Riverton NWS office expects Facebook to offer another venue for providing text-only messages, images/graphics, and links for its ‘fans’ to be better informed of the various weather events that develop throughout their service area in Wyoming. One such event is the potential for spring flooding across Wyoming this year.
Furthermore, the NWS hopes that Facebook will help them maintain awareness of current weather conditions by allowing the public to post current weather conditions to the wall, especially when hazardous weather impacts the region.
Facebook users will be able to find the National Weather Service page by searching for "US National Weather Service Riverton" on Facebook or at: http://www.facebook.com/US.NationalWeatherService.Riverton.gov
