On January 28th, the Wyoming County Commissioners Association sent a letter to Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Director Robert Abbey with their comments on the draft manuals that are said to implement the Department of Interior Secretarial Order 3310 Wild Lands Policy. The letter notes that in implementing this new policy, the BLM has not asked for any public comment to determine the impact of the new policy on rural communities throughout the west. The 12-page letter states numerous reasons why the BLM has no legal authority to create new wild lands. "The WCCA hopes that instead of implementing the Secretarial Order and the Manuals, the BLM will proceed to honor its coordination mandate and withdraw both Manuals in order to reassess the Wild Lands Policy and the adverse impacts on rural communities throughout the West." Also on January 28th, the Western Congressional Caucus, with 58 signatures, sent a letter to U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, expressing their concerns over Secretarial Order 3310. "We are writing to express our concerns about the Department of the Interior's POI) recent issuance of Secretarial Order No. 3310. This order implements a sweeping new wilderness
policy for Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands without congressional input. It has the potential to put an end to many traditional BLM land uses while setting aside vast areas of the American West as de facto wilderness. This directive will significantly impact western economies and rural communities, which depend on multiple-use access to federal lands."
