We just did a quick check with the Pinedale Ranger District, Bridger-Teton National Forest, to get the latest status on area roads to favorite places for the holiday weekend. This report is as of 5:00 PM on Friday, May 23.
Green River Lakes Road - CLOSED: The Green River Lakes Road is CLOSED. Recent rains and snow have made the road surface is very muddy, soft and wet. Conditions were described as “slimy” and there have been some washouts. The Forest Service has closed that road to prevent further damage.
Elkhart Park - Still snowed in: The road is still snowed in at the top and the road is only open about ¾ of the way up. The trailhead is not accessible yet by wheeled vehicles.
Big Sandy - Still snowed in: This road is also still snowed in and closed to wheeled vehicles. The last report we had was the road is open about as far as the summer homes.
Lower elevation roads are mostly open and dry. Recent rains are causing the grass to green up, but also make roads muddy and soft in places. Recreationists are asked to not drive on road surfaces if their traffic will create ruts or cause road damage.
Streams and rivers rising with spring melt
The recent snowmelt, coupled with spring rain storms, have caused rivers and streams to rise quickly. The weekend weather is forecast to have isolated scattered showers and thunderstorms. The main threats associated with these storms will be gusty winds and the potential for small hail.
