Citizens plan “Sit-In” to protest gas field air pollution
Peaceful Protest planned on the Mesa on May 4th
April 28, 2008
Twenty people showed up at the Pinedale Library to attend a meeting to organize a peaceful protest next month. The protest will focus on truck traffic and stronger emission controls to decrease ozone precursors. “This collective community message is being directed toward the Oil and Gas Operators in Sublette County, the BLM, local and State government officials, the DEQ, the EPA, and other resource agencies,” said organizer Elaine Crumpley. The slogan for the cause is "DO IT RIGHT....NOW!"
The Sit-In activities will include speakers to address the group’s main concerns, high school students performing readings, songs and dialog, community members to provide music, educational information will be given out, and local and State media are being contacted. The group intends for this protest to maintain a peaceful demeanor and abiding by the rules. Security officers will be present.
There will be a poster-making workshop on Wednesday, April 30th at 6:00 PM at the Sublette County Library in Pinedale. Participants are asked to bring their own poster board and markers. Some materials will be available. “If you cannot attend the poster making, workshop, please create one and bring it to the Protest on Sunday,” said Crumpley.
The peaceful protestors plan to meet at the BLM parking lot at Noon on Sunday, May 4th, then car-pool/caravan out to the Mesa and Pit site. “We will be self-sufficient so please plan to bring a tarp to sit on, water to drink and warm clothing in case of bad weather,” she said.
