EPA scientists wanted stricter limits: Bush administration pulls last-minute intervention for less restrictive limit
March 14, 2008

The Washington Post wrote an article on Friday, March 14, saying the Bush Administration pulled a last-minute interference in the new Ozone standard limits the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had planned to release on Wednesday, March 12th. As a result of the intervention, the EPA weakened one part of its new limits on smog-forming ozone. The EPA had set a press conference for 2:00 PM on Wednesday to announce the new standards, then hastily changed that conference to 6:00 PM.

The Washington Post article states, “The president's order prompted a scramble by administration officials to rewrite the regulations to avoid a conflict with past EPA statements on the harm caused by ozone.”

The Washington Post says, “The documents, which were released by the EPA late Wednesday night, provided insight into how White House officials helped shape the new air-quality rules that, by law, are supposed to be decided by the EPA administrator. “

The EPA set the allowable amount of ozone in the air at 75 parts per billion (ppb), a level stricter than the previous limit of 84 ppb, but higher than what the scientific advisers had recommended, according to the Washington Post.
