A reader wrote in asking us to give recognition to a local girl who is home on leave from the Army. “Kelsey Rooks, daughter of Rob Rooks, address The Rim....Let her know that every one is proud of her. Wish her many happy hours with her family and friends. What a brave little girl...Serving her country like so many young ones are...Thank you “ We called her up on Tuesday evening to pass on the e-mail note and find out more about what she is doing..
18-year old Kelsey Rooks graduated from Pinedale High School last year and joined the Army in March. She just completed five months of basic training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri and is now home on leave for a short while.
While in Basic Training, she received training as a military police officer. While back here on leave, she will work on some home-town recruiting. Then she will go to Fort Hood in Texas. Where she will ultimately go next depends on where her unit is next assigned. She might remain in Texas and work as an MP, or she could be deployed, possibly to Iraq.
Asked how she likes the Army so far, she said she has only seen, “the tip of the iceberg.” For now, she really likes it. The Army will pay for most of her college education when she gets out, and she is thinking about studying forensic engineering.
She said getting the note was a big surprise. “It’s great to have people say thank you,” she said. She also said she would love to hear from anyone who would like to write. She can be reached by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org. “It really helps to hear from people,” she added.
