Chance of snow this week
November 18, 2007
The National Weather Service out of Riverton is advising that winds will pick up and there will be an increasing chance of snow over the next couple of days as a strong cold front approaches Wyoming. Sustained wind speeds could approach 40 mph. The east side of the state could get wind gusts as high as 60 mph. The “wind corridor” from Rock Springs to Casper and the Dubois and Cody foothills are expected to get strong winds. Stronger winds are expected over the summits and passes in the western mountains.
There is a Winter Storm Watch in effect for Yellowstone National Park and the Absaroka mountains for Monday night and Tuesday morning.
Wind speeds are expected to continue to increase Monday as the cold front approaches and moves into Wyoming by the night. This cold storm system is expected to linger into Wednesday, bringing periods of snow to most of the area. As much as 10 to 20 inches of snow could drop in Yellowstone Park and the adjacent Absaroka mountains. The eastern slopes of the Wind River Mountains could get 6-8 inches of snowfall from this system. Casper and Lander could see 3-6 inches of snowfall.
High temperatures are not expected to get much above the mid-20s to the lower 30s as this storm settles in. Higher elevations will be chillier, with temperatures in the teens and mid-20s. Those with outdoor interests or travel plans for the upcoming holidays are encouraged to stay tuned to the latest weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to prepare for this major change to winter weather conditions.
