Impacts individual users and some public safety communications
April 18, 2007
“A service interruption occurred Tuesday night that affected BlackBerry in North America”, according to a statement from Research In Motion (RIM). The BlackBerry service experienced a widespread outage in United States.
Some users may not be aware that their devices are not working. Users should check their devices to make see if their service is functioning. People sending messages to these devices may not be able to communicate with the recipient.
RIM is a leading designer, manufacturer and marketer of innovative wireless technology for the worldwide mobile communications market. The BlackBerry wireless platform is used by communication devices that allow the sending and receiving of e-mail without hardwire connections to internet links.
The outage has not only affected millions of individual users but also affected public safety communications throughout the country including police, fire and Homeland Security users who use the network. The root cause is currently undetermined. Delays may still persist in using the BlackBerry system.
