New Fork Lake is Open

If you still are feeling the effects of winter's cabin fever, head to New Fork Lakes! The road is completely dry and solid clear back to the Narrows Campground. Even the side roads are looking very good here. This report is mostly for those of you wanting to know what the road is like for access purposes, so we took pictures mostly from that perspective. See Dave Bell's photo gallery pictures from today also for some more scenic views, www.pinedalewyoming.com/photogallery/davebell

The lake below the Narrows still has ice on about half the lake with open water to about 150 feet out. We saw one person who had a boat in already. The upper portion of the lake has much less ice than the lower lake. You RV-ers will have no problem getting in here now all the way to the end. There still aren't any services at the campground, and no campground host on duty. But if you're self-sufficient for overnight camping, or just looking for a great place for a day picnic, this is the place we recommend right now. The trailhead access parking lot had one soggy section, but there is still plenty of room to park on solid dry ground to get to the trailhead and the corrals. The trail was dry at the trailhead at least.

The bugs still aren't out and there is lots of wildlife. We saw many deer, antelope and one moose that was content to pose for many pictures. The road is perfect for you bikers who want a nice, easy ride with pretty views for many miles. The leaves will be coming out on the aspens in another week or two for sure here, with yellow Arrowleaf Balsamroot in bloom by mid May.

And the fishing? We had one fisherman stop to tell us he has been coming up here for 16 years and this is the best fishing he have seen here ever! He said he caught about 10 nice rainbows in about two hours of fishing Sunday on New Fork Lake. He was fishing the lower end by the lower campground and he said you could see the fish swimming. "Big fish, the best fishing ever!" he told us.

New Fork Lake is definitely the place we recommend folks go to right now and let Green River Lakes road have another couple of weeks to dry out and the roadbed firm up. This is a great place right now for a day drive, picnic, walking the dog, hiking or mountain biking. Spring has arrived! Photos by Dawn Svalberg
