Saturday night, March 27 saw the historic Daniel Community Center filled to capacity with old-timers and many newcomers, all ready to get a bowl of homemade chili and help the Community Center raise funds for upkeep, insurance and utilities.
A table full of side dishes, donated by community members, fairly groaned under the weight of salads, bread, deviled eggs, jello and more. In the back of the room, another table grew sway-backed with submissions for the cake auction.
After the judges determined the winners and withdrew from the approximately two-dozen crock pots lining the walls, the hungry crowd surged forward in an orderly stampede to consume all the goodies. The smartest eaters emerged from the buffet and returned to the end of the line, spooning chili from full bowls, sure to be ready for seconds by the time the opportunity arose.
Steve James auctioned the cakes with his usual panache, and a pinata contest was held for the kids. A number of grownups spilled out of the schoolhouse and repaired to the Green River Bar for further refreshment.
Judges Lisa Glenn, Greg Rouse, Tanna Jones, Gene Lippincott and Kenny Oberreit selected the following winners:
1st Place - Henry Schmidt
2nd Place - Jim Schmidt
3rd Place - Gene Eversull
1st Place - Mike Vargo
2nd Place - Jessica Schmidt
3rd Place - Sue Eversull
