Description:The Bar Cross Ranch aspires to honor and uphold its land, people, livestock and wildlife through progressive asset management for ecological and economic vibrancy. Bar Cross Ranch desires to increase the health of our soils, abundance and diversity of our plant communities, and quality and abundance of our water; while also improving the well-being of our people, livestock, and our community.

The ranch is a seasonal, summer yearling outfit located in western Wyoming, with winter leases in California as well. Elevations exceed 7,000 ft and precipitation averages 11" of rainfall and 65" of snowfall. The annual growing season is quite short at 51 average days.

The ranch has been in operation for over 100 years and is well known in the community. Pasture assets consist of flood irrigated meadows, sage steppe upland pastures, and USFS permits.

There are a number of riparian areas and wells to provide irrigation and stock water. The current owner has invested in a number of infrastructure improvements (fencing, irrigation, corrals, stock water, buildings).

Areas of Responsibility:
Assist in planning, reporting and compliance with annual budgets and strategic planning;

Assist in management of seasonal employees under direction of Ranch Manager. Ensure responsibilities and tasks of most importance are completed in a timely manner, employees are prompt, organized, and effective;

Responsible for the utilization and maintenance of the ranch’s water resources:
Maintain, develop and utilize existing water rights across 2,300+ acres of flood irrigated meadows from spring to autumn each year;
Promote efficiency in irrigation (giving plants what they need when they needed) by utilizing pulse irrigation methods;
Develop efficient water usage monitoring system across network;
Maintain existing irrigation infrastructure (coordinate repairs behind cattle leaving a paddock);
Develop and irrigation training plan for seasonal employees to include an electronic mapping of all existing infrastructure;
Develop additional storage and/or irrigation opportunities.
Participate in and contribute innovative ideas in all water related meetings.
Assist in the development of an annual irrigation maintenance schedule and see to its successful execution.

Responsible for cattle performance and health:
Ensure all animal are doctored in a timely manner and record drugs used, date doctored, mark animal in appropriate manner;
Present at all cattle work – receiving, processing, shipping, grazing moves;
Monitor animal behavior and report to Ranch Manager for discussion on necessary grazing changes;
Includes travel to CA to inspect pasture condition, cattle performance and health, and on the ground management

Responsible for successful execution of seasonal grazing plan. Ensure grazing paddocks, water, exterior fences, and personnel are in place for success:
Responsible for the maintenance, installation, and seasonal removal of all electric fencing equipment and supplies;
Coordinate employees to construct paddocks in a timely manner prior to cattle movement;
Keep all fencing supplies in good order, with a running inventory at all times;
Inform Ranch Manager of any supplies needed for success;

Responsible for equipment and infrastructure repair and maintenance:
Develop and maintain orderly records of machinery and equipment maintenance, meeting manufacturer guidelines;
Prepare seasonal fence maintenance schedule for all permanent fencing;
Assist in the management of owner and employee housing;

Targets:
Employees are well-managed, with daily tasks clearly outlined and organized each day;
Yearlings gain 1.8lbs/day;
Mortality less than 3%;
Cattle will be moved in accordance with the grazing plan for the season;
Grazing cells and water will be up and functional two days prior to scheduled move;
Irrigation ditches will function properly, allowing for controlled flooding;
Irrigation will shut down and grazing cells will be ready to receive cattle in accordance with grazing schedule;
Equipment will be maintained according to schedules set by manufacturer;
Ranch facilities are maintained at all times

Qualifications:
Experience in managing people as part of a team;
Experience in a large-scale grazing system with high stock densities,
frequent moves, and monitoring of forage conditions;
Business planning and financial planning experience;
Strong horsemanship and low stress stock handling skills;
Experience in monitoring forage productivity and riparian health;
Flood irrigation experience;
Equipment maintenance and shop skills;
Willingness to regularly travel to or relocate to CA during winter months;
Involvement in an industry, trade or non-government organization involved in ranching.
Resourcefulness, initiative, curious nature, strong communications skills, accountability and a high level of enthusiasm for attaining ranch’s ecological and economic goals.

These additional qualifications are not required, but are a plus:
A bachelors degree in range management, ecology, agri-business or related field;
A demonstrated track record of continuous learning (investments in continuing education);
Experience of at least 3-5 years in a relevant position.

Compensation and Benefits:
The ranch will pay competitive wages commensurate with experience;
Provision of housing or a housing stipend;
