Big Piney – Marbleton Stage Stop IPSSSDR – Photo Gallery
by Pinedale Online!
February 1, 2012

The Big Piney/Marbleton Stage Stop of the International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race took place on Monday and Tuesday, January 30 & 31, 2012. Mushers and their teams arrived in Big Piney and Marbleton on Monday evening after participating in the Pinedale stage of the race earlier in the morning.

The two communities hosted a "Meet the Mushers" banquet at the Marbleton Senior Center feasting on spaghetti and their famous home-made Dutch Oven cooking delights, a cooking trademark for this Stage Stop. (A Dutch oven is a thick-walled, usually cast iron cooking pot with a tight-fitting lid. Similar to the concept of a crock pot, Dutch ovens are placed on a fire or over hot coals to slow cook the contents. Dutch ovens have been used as cooking pots for hundreds of years, and are a unique part of the cowboy and ranching tradition of the West. Expert cooks can prepare main dishes, breads, soups, stews and desserts in these large pots with incredibly delicious results.) There was also live music by the band "Screen Door Porch" and a slide show of the 2011 IPSSSDR.

The following morning, the teams headed to the Middle Piney parking lot for the Start/Finish of the Big Piney/Marbleton Stage. Teams ran a 54-mile loop course through the stunning beautiful mountains of the Wyoming Range in the Bridger-Teton National Forest. After this race, teams headed to Alpine for the next stage. From there they go to Evanston, Mountain View/Lyman and then ending in Park City, Utah on Saturday, February 4th. The team with the fastest cumulative time wins this year’s IPSSSDR.

The IPSSSDR, the largest sled dog race in the lower 48 states. It was founded in 1996 by Sublette County resident, Frank Teasley to make sled dog racing more accessible to the public.

This is the 17th year for the internationally-famous sled dog race, whose purpose is to promote awareness of the sport of sled dog racing, encourage responsible pet ownership, and support childhood immunizations against diseases. The main race sponsor is Pedigree Foods, which generously donates dog food to animal shelters in the host communities.

For race results and more information about the IPSSSDR, go to www.wyomingstagestop.org

Local businesses and organizations sponsored banners which were carried on each of the sleds during the race.

Sponsors for the 2012 Big Piney/Marbleton Stage Stop were:
Town of Big Piney, Big Piney, Wyoming
Town of Marbleton, Marbleton, Wyoming
Marbleton Inn, Marbleton, Wyoming
EOG Resources Inc., Big Piney, Wyoming
Western Veterinary Services, Big Piney, Wyoming
Shell Rocky Mountain Production, Pinedale, Wyoming

Special thanks to Sherri Redden, who organizes all the musher housing in our area and helps sell the t-shirts at the banquet, helper Janet Beiermann, and Big Piney Elementary School. Official Chairpersons for the Big Piney/Marbleton Stage Stop are Carie Whitman and Bob Beiermann.
