Public Meeting in Rock Springs to discuss WLCI
Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative
by Bureau of Land Management
September 21, 2007

The state and federal agencies involved in the new Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative (WLCI) will host a public meeting from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 26, at the Rock Springs Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Office. “We want to bring the public up-to-date on our progress so far and what’s next for the WLCI,” said Terry Cleveland, Director of the Wyoming Game & Fish Department.

Cleveland is one of six WLCI Executive Committee members and will serve as host for the Sept. 26 meeting. The WLCI Executive Committee comprises representatives from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Forest Service, Wyoming Game & Fish Department, Wyoming Department of Agriculture and U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

The WLCI is a long-term science-based effort to assess and enhance aquatic and terrestrial habitats at a landscape scale in Southwest Wyoming, while facilitating responsible energy development. More information on the WLCI can be found at: http://www.wlci.gov/.

“We’ve made some headway in getting the WLCI off the ground. The WLCI is unique in its composition and scope of work. All of the partnering organizations have stepped up to the plate and pitched in to getting the WLCI started and to move it forward,” Cleveland added.

At the Sept. 26 meeting, the WLCI Executive Committee will discuss how the WLCI has moved from an idea to reality. The concept began less than two years ago. To date, the committee has established a field coordination team led by WLCI Coordinator Renee Dana. The Field Coordination Team is currently working on challenges in developing criteria for project consideration and selection; appropriate allocation of funding from various sources; and preparing Fiscal Year 2008 and 2009 budgets. The team is housed in the BLM Rock Springs Field Office.

Additionally, a Science and Technical Group has been formed, as well as a Data and Information Technical Group that will provide an accessible data catalog and website.
