LaBarge man, 21, killed in fall near Fremont Peak on Monday

Sublette County Sheriff's Office News Release:

Monday afternoon, September 3, 2001, Sublette County Sheriff's dispatch received a cell phone call from a hiker near Fremont Peak that a person had fallen to his death in the area. Sheriff's dispatched called Air Idaho from Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center from Idaho Falls and they flew in to assist. They located the body of Anton John Elmlinger, age 21, of LaBarge, Wyoming on a cliff about 500 feet above the valley floor above Mistake Lake in the Bridger Teton Wilderness.

Anton had been hiking and rock climbing in the area about 18 miles northeast of Elkhart Park, a popular wilderness entrance about 12 miles east of Pinedale, Wyoming. Anton and his dad were climbing down towards Mistake Lake and were about 500 feet above the valley floor when Jerry Elmlinger accidentally dislodged a rock that fell down and hit Anton. Anton then fell approximately 100 feet. Anton lived for a short time and died from apparent head trauma.

Air Idaho came back into the area on Tuesday, September 4, and with the assistance of Tip Top Search and Rescue High Angle Team, was able to helicopter lift the body out of the area to Elkhart Park where he was received by County Coroner Bill Meyer and pronounced dead.
