Description:This position is a seasonal position beginning in April and ending in October.

The ranch is a seasonal yearling outfit located in western Wyoming. Elevations exceed 7,000 ft and precipitation averages 11" of rainfall and 65" of snowfall. The annual growing season is quite short at 51 average days.

The ranch has been in operation for over 100 years and is well known in the community. Pasture assets consist of flood irrigated meadows, sage steppe upland pastures, and USFS permits. There are a number of riparian areas and wells to provide irrigation and stock water. The current owner has invested in a number of infrastructure improvements (fencing, irrigation, corrals, stock water, buildings).

Bar Cross desires to manage its natural assets in a progressive manner in order to meet both ecological and economic goals of the ranch.

Areas of Responsibility:
o Responsible for health and productivity of grazing animals:
- Identify and doctor sickness in grazing cell herds; record dates, symptoms, and drugs used (as needed)
- Strategic salt and mineral placement to facilitate optimum grazing
- Participate and aid in planning all cattle moves from cell to cell and/or pasture to pasture
- Track daily pasture conditions and update Ranch Manager on changing conditions (Daily)
- Track on dates and off dates plus herd count for pasture moves in accordance with grazing plan
- Assist in all cattle work including receiving, moving, and shipping.
- Assist in checking and moving cattle on FS and BLM permits as needed, while ensuring corresponding grazing regulations are followed

o Responsible for proper grazing infrastructure:
- Construct grazing cells with poly wire in larger pastures and on hay meadows two days prior to scheduled move;
- Coordinate with Irrigation person to ensure cattle have stock water at all times, with setup occurring in new pastures two days prior to scheduled move;
- Utilize existing flood irrigation systems to manage flood irrigation in a "pulse" method, allowing enough time for paddocks to dry prior to cattle entering, and immediately re-applying water after cattle leave;

o Responsible for equipment and infrastructure maintenance:
- Extensive barbed wire fence repair and maintenance responsibilities, to include permanent and let-down fence;
- Equipment and facility repairs identified, reported, and resolved (on going)

Targets:
- Yearlings gain 1.8lbs/day;
- Mortality less than 3%;
- Cattle will be moved in accordance with the grazing plan for the season;
- Grazing cells and water will be up and functional two days prior to scheduled move;
- Cattle will remain in grazing cells according to grazing plan and/or the direction of the Ranch Manager;
- Irrigation ditches will function properly, allowing for controlled flooding;
- Irrigation will shut down and grazing cells will be ready to receive cattle in accordance with grazing schedule
- Equipment will be maintained according to schedules set by manufacturer
- Equipment and Materials will be organized and stored in an orderly fashion

Qualifications:
• The position requires an individual with the following experience and characteristics:
- Poly wire experience is required, or a strong desire and ability to learn poly wire systems;
- Demonstrated experience in identifying and doctoring yearling animals horseback;
- Demonstrated experience in activities such as equipment repair and maintenance, fence repair, etc.;
- Strong horsemanship and low stress stock handling skills;
- Experience in a grazing system with high stock densities, frequent moves, and monitoring of forage conditions;
- Experience or a strong willingness to learn about forage productivity and riparian health;
- Flood irrigation experience is highly desired, but not required;
- Resourcefulness, initiative, curious nature, strong communications skills, accountability and a high level of enthusiasm for attaining ranch’s ecological and economic goals; and

• These additional qualifications are not required, but are a plus:
- A bachelors degree or pursual of a bachelors in range management, ecology, agri-business or related field;
- A demonstrated track record of continuous learning (investments in continuing education);
- Involvement in an industry, trade or non-government organization involved in ranching.

Compensation and Benefits:
• The ranch will pay competitive wages commensurate with experience;
