LEGENDS!
Lost Gold!
Legend tells of three adventurers who came to the Wind River Mountains after hearing of a place where gold nuggets were strewn around the ground like a sea of pebbles.
For weeks they traveled up and down the sides of the mountains and through the steep canyons. One night they camped by a small, swift-running stream where they discovered huge nuggets of pure gold! During the following weeks, the three men built a log cabin in a wide spot near the stream and buried nuggets of gold under the dirt floor of the cabin.
One day they were attacked by Indians and two of the prospectors were killed. One of the men narrowly escaped death and found his way out of the mountains. He left the area to spend the winter in Walla Walla, Washington.
The next year he returned to try and find his cabin and the gold, but he was never again able to find the right stream or the cabin, even after much searching.
It is unlikely that anything remains today of the log cabin, except perhaps for stones from the fireplace. If someone happened across the remains of an old cabin near a stream in the Wind River Mountains, he could well dig up a fortune in gold nuggets!
